14-year-old prodigy Emmitt Rhodes, wheelchair-bound and afflicted with Lou Gehrig's Disease, loses his faith in God when his father dies and he finds out his illness is terminal. Despite his genius, he fails to find a cure for himself. Meanwhile, Emmitt's mysterious science teacher, Hans Orion, challenges Emmitt's atheism. Through a series of debates, Emmitt comes to realize that the universe does need a cause for its existence. But it isn't until he and his brother Billy enter the Senior Scavenger Hunt -- a dangerous event where cars race from one checkpoint to another -- that Emmitt takes a leap of faith and prays to the very God he's been trying to disprove. For when Emmitt and Billy get into a car accident on a collapsing bridge, Emmitt realizes he will need a miracle to survive. Inspired by the twinkling of his "Lucky Star," Emmitt prays for that miracle. And he gets it in the most unlikely way -- through Mr. Orion -- who turns out to be much more than a science teacher.
